Pulsation Dampers

Why use pulsation dampers?

Pulsation dampers are a special form of pressure accumulator whose special design provides highly effective damping of pressure fluctuations in pneumatic systems.

Their use is particularly advantageous with powerful piston compressors, which often cause significant pulsation during pressure build-up. These pressure fluctuations can impair precise control processes and measurements.

Through highly effective suppression of pulsation amplitudes, pulsation dampers not only reduce the noise emission of the entire system but also ensure trouble-free operation of controls and measuring devices. Sensitive sensor data is not overlaid by high interference levels, significantly simplifying the evaluation of measurement results.

In addition, they are cost-effective and simultaneously act as efficient pressure accumulators, ensuring a continuous flow of pressure.

The Basics

What is the difference?

Both components initially serve as intermediate storage for compressed air or vacuum in automation technology. Nevertheless, there are decisive differences in their function and application.

Pressure Accumulator

Basic functions

  • Permanent provision of working pressure
  • Constant working pressure, largely independent of compressor load
  • Safeguarding: working pressure for emergency triggering during a power outage
  • Protects compressors by avoiding constant alternating loads for short-term demand
  • Noise reduction through less frequent and more even use of compressors

Pulsation Damper

Use in sensitive applications

Pulsation dampers additionally take on the task of drastically reducing pressure fluctuations in the system. This is particularly relevant for piston compressors, as they tend to produce an irregular, strongly pulsating pressure flow due to strong pulsation, especially during pressure build-up, which can disturb sensitive components such as dosing devices, actuators or measuring equipment.

In such cases — e.g. for dosing tasks or precise measurements — pulsation dampers are the best choice. Installed in-line between pump and actuator, they act as a combined pressure accumulator and damper. Already in the standard version, a pulsation damper reduces the pressure amplitude by more than 12 dB. Depending on the application, variants with even higher damping performance are available.
